This is a Spanish article published in 1962 about the use of one of the first NSAID (called butazolidin in combination with prednisone) to treat rheumatic pains such as fibrositis. Back mice used to be called fibrositis of the back (fibrositis de la espalda).
It goes deeply in all the possible pharmacological effects of the DELTA BUTAZOLIDIN. And it concludes that this drug is useful with many types of rheumatic pains, like fibrositis. Later, the butazolidin was forbidden in certain countries for general use in humans.
(Personal note: Like in present days, most of the rheumatic pains are treated with NSAIDs.)
Nuestra experiencia con la asociación fenilbutazona-prednisona (delta-butazolidina) en clínica reumatológica
[Our experience in the treatment of rheumatic diseases with the combination of phenylbutazone-prednisone]
Barceló, A. Serra Peralba y J. Obach Benach
The authors start by talking about the fact that the pharmaceutical industry tried to develop an antirheumatic drug.
They mention certain drug effects:
- -analgesic effect
- -antiphlogistic effect
- -antipyretic effect
- -spasmolytic effect on smooth muscles
- -antihistaminic effect
- -antimitotic effect
Barceló et al. mention old drugs like dipyrine and irgapyrine.
They theorize that the combination of phenylbutazone-prednisone had a pharmacologic synergism.
They present their clinical experience and also mention an extensive list of similar papers in the bibliography.
They mainly had good results with the following diseases:
- -acute R.A. and ankylopoietic sponsylarthritis
- -Bechterew’s disease
- –muscular rheumatism and acute periarthritis
- -acute stage of rheumatic fever
- -maintenance treatment of arthrosis, spondylosis and tendinitis
- -gout attack
They analyze the side effects such as:
- digestive disorders
- water retention
- hormonal effect
- allergic reaction
They explain that the drugs worked in a big range of pathologies like scapulohumeral periarthritis, lumbar sciatica, and discopathy, degenerative rheumatism and fibrositis, in general in all the main rheumatic pains.
